DAVID YUZHIN (VILLAGE BIG KARAKULA, EKATERINOSLAV, 1863 – MOSCOW, 1923)

 

 

  

 

His real surname was Pisitko. In his youth Yuzhin sang in church chorus. He studied in Taganrog with Regent Anastaseva. According to D. Agreneva-Slavjanskaya Yuzhin has gone to Petersburg, where, after unsuccessful attempt to study at the conservatory, took lessons of singing from M. Leonova. Later he studied in Europe with Clark, O. Sefferi, P. Vidal and S. Capelli. Since 1892 Yuzhin sang in chorus of Mariinsky Theatre. He made his debut in 1894 at the Kazansk-Saratovsk opera company. From 1896 to 1900 Yuzhin appeared in Samara, Kharkov, Odessa, Perm (1896-99), Kiev (1900, 1912), from 1901 to 1908 he sang at the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre, where made his debut as Raoul in ”Gli Ugonotti”, one of his best roles. At the same time sang also at  the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, from 1908 to 1912 at the S. Zimin’s Opera. In 1902 Yuzhin with great success appeared in Italy (Florence, Turin), where he participated in the premiere of Rendano’s opera ”Consuela”, also in South America (1907), Brussels. He also performed in Tiflis, Kazan, Saratov, Odessa, Yalta, Baku, Ekaterinoslav. In different years has organized some own enterprises with which went on tour on cities of Russia. He had a beautiful, soft timbre, dramatic talent and bright scenic appearance. The greatest success had as performer of roles in the West-European repertoirе. His wife was a great russian soprano Natalya Ermolenko-Yuzhina (1881-1937).
