DMITRY DOBKIN (ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA, 1886 – NEW YORK, USA, 1953)

 

 

 

 

He studied at the Warsaw Musical Institute, the St. Petersburg Conservatory, and also in Milan, Italy. The latter was due to a scholarshop bestowed by Grand Duke Konstantin for five years of study in Italy. Dobkin made his operatic debut in Venice in 1908, and continued to sing in Italy until 1909. He then returned to Russia and sang with the Petrograd Opera Company from 1910-13. During WWI he sang in Scandinavia (1917-1920), and rather than return to Russia after the Revolution, he came to the United States in 1920 and made his debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He gave many concert recitals, including some with the noted British pianist, Dame Myra Hess, and toured the U.S. (1925-28). He also appeared on the radio, and made a number of recordings, which included songs from the Yiddish Theater. He was founder and director of the Free Musical Society and founder of the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra. Dobkin also taught.
