LEV KLEMENTIEV (ST. PETERSBURG, 12 (24) FEBRUARY, 1868 – TBILISI, 13 (26) NOVEMBER, 1910)
Klementiev began his musical studies in St. Petersburg (1887-1888) under K. I. Krjijanovsky, with further training in Paris (with Olivieri) and Milan (with Martin Petz). His early career involved operetta performances in St. Petersburg, Kharkov, and Odessa. Transitioning to opera, he became a soloist at the Kiev Opera Theatre (1888-1889) and the Tbilisi Opera Theatre (1889-1890).
From 1892 to 1902, Klementiev was a prominent performer at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre, debuting as Hermann in Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades. Over a decade, he appeared in 35 operas. Later, he expanded his repertoire in various St. Petersburg theaters, including the Mariinsky Theatre and the Russian Opera.
Internationally, he performed in Paris (Theatre “Olimpia,” 1904), the United States, and Sofia, Bulgaria.
Klementiev created notable roles during his career, showcasing his involvement in the premieres of significant operatic works. These include:
