Description
BORIS EMMANUILOVICH GOLDSTEIN (ODESSA, UKRAINIAN SSR, SOVIET UNION, 25 DECEMBER, 1922 – HANOVER, GERMANY, 8 NOVEMBER, 1987)
Boris Emmanuilovich Goldstein, known by the diminutive Busya, was a Soviet violinist whose career was significantly hindered by the political climate of the Soviet Union. A prodigy, he began his violin studies in Odessa with the eminent pedagogue Pyotr Stolyarsky, later continuing at the Moscow Conservatory under Abram Yampolsky and Lev Tseitlin. As a teenager, he was singled out by Jascha Heifetz as the most brilliant violin talent in the Soviet Union. His brother was the violinist and composer Mikhail Goldstein.
Goldstein was born in Odessa in 1922, the son of Mendel Abramovich-Geynikhovich Goldshteyn (born 1885 in Odessa), a personal distinguished citizen, and Sura Iosifovna Goldshteyn (née Kigel, born 1887 in Orhei). They registered their marriage on 26 July 1909 in Odessa. His paternal grandparents, who married in Odessa on 10 August 1876, were Abram-Geynikh Goldshteyn, an Odessa resident, and Pesya Yudkovna Siminshteyn from Nemyriv.
In 1935, Goldstein won fourth prize at the Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition in Warsaw. Ginette Neveu (France) won first prize, David Oistrakh second, and Josef Hassid (Poland) received an honorary diploma.
At the 1937 International Ysaÿe Competition, one of the most prestigious international music competitions of the era, Stolyarsky’s students created a sensation. The top prizes went to David Oistrakh, Boris Goldstein, Yelizaveta Gilels, and Mikhail Fikhtengoltz. Contemporary reports noted:
“The results of the sessions created a profound impression: the Soviet school, with an assurance bordering on arrogance, carried off all the prizes from the first down. The first prize was awarded without the slightest discussion to the great David Oistrakh. Everyone else had to be content with crumbs; the Belgian violin school, though still a source of pride, failed, and its absence from the final was much commented on. Arthur Grumiaux and Carlo Van Neste, both young and inexperienced, were not able to convince the jury.”
Forced to emigrate later in life, Goldstein settled in Germany, where he taught, although his solo career never regained its early momentum.
Among his notable students were Zakhar Bron and Alexander Skwortsow.
Boris Goldstein died on 8 November 1987 in Hanover, Germany.
