SANDRA DRUCKER (SAINT PETERSBURG, RUSSIA, MAY 7, 1875 – HAMAR, HEDMARK, NORWAY, APRIL 1, 1944)
Sandra Drucker was born on May 7, 1875 in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Her father was a Jew from Germany, her mother was Russian, from an aristocratic family. Sandra received her musical education at the St. Petersburg Conservatory named after N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov. She was a student of Anton Rubinstein. Learning from Rubinstein, she knew a lot about him, and in 1904 she published a book in which she described A. Rubinstein’s teaching methods. She made her debut in 1894. She toured not only in Russia, but also in England, Italy, Germany and Scandinavia . She performed the works of her teacher, Anton Rubinstein, Liszt, Chopin, Schumann, Beethoven (Appassionata, op. 57, sonata op. 109), Brahms (Rhapsody, op. 79/1), Russian composers – Glinka, Balakirev, Tchaikovsky and others. Drucker spoke six languages. In 1896 she made her debut in Berlin and received positive reviews. In the 1880s she lived in Berlin, continuing her career as a pianist. From 1904 to 1906 she taught in Berlin at the Petersen Academy of Music and at the Stern Conservatory , Anna-Maria Erbeck is the most famous of her students. In 1905 she gave piano lessons to the daughter of the German emperor Wilhelm II Victoria Louise of Prussia. In 1905, her piano playing was recorded for the Welte-Mignon company, followed by playback on programmed sound carriers. In 1910 she married the Austrian pianist Gottfried Galston and changed her surname to Drucker-Galston. The couple settled in Munich, their marriage lasted until 1918. In 1926 Drucker returned to Berlin; however, after 1933, she left Germany because of her Jewish origin and settled in Oslo, taking Norwegian citizenship in 1938. During these years, Drucker gave concerts, lectured at concerts, telling listeners about the history of music, works performed, etc. She died in 1944 in the Hamar Red Cross Hospital, near Oslo.
