Description

ANDREW BLACK (GLASGOW, SCOTLAND, 15 JANUARY, 1859 – SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, 15 SEPTEMBER, 1920)

He first became organist at the Anderson United Presbyterian Church in Glasgow but then trained his voice with Alberto Randegger and John B. Welch in London, and with Domenico Scafati in Milan. He began his career in Scotland and had his first successful appearance at the Crystal Palace in London in 1887. His career was primarily focused on concert singing, especially oratorio. Solo roles in Mendelssohn’s Elijah (notably in 1894 at the Birmingham Festival and on many other occasions), in The Apostles by Edward Elgar (creating the role of Judas at its premiere at the Birmingham Festival on October 14, 1903), and in The Spectre’s Bride (Leeds Festival, 1892) by Antonín Dvořák were among the highlights of his extensive oratorio and concert repertoire, which also included numerous song compositions. In 1893, he sang a solo in the world premiere of Dvořák’s Mass in D major in London. In England and the USA, he also occasionally appeared as an opera singer. When the Royal College of Music in Manchester opened in 1893, he was appointed professor. After a tour of Australia in 1913, he remained there as a teacher.
