CELESTINO SAROBE (ORIO, GUIPUZCOA / PROVINCE, SPAIN, 1892 – BARCELONA, SPAIN, 1952)

His real name was Celestino Aguirre Sarobe Zadarain. Initially, he studied medicine before transitioning to music, training as a baritone. In 1914, he gave concerts in Spain, where his talent caught the attention of the legendary baritone Mattia Battistini, who invited him to Rome for further training. He made his operatic debut in 1919 at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona in La Morisca by Pahissa.

That same year, Spanish soprano María Llácer engaged him for her opera troupe’s tour of Italy. From 1920 to 1925, he sang with great success at the Teatro Real in Madrid. During the 1923-1924 season, he returned to the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona, where he performed alongside the celebrated tenor Hipólito Lázaro. He also appeared at the Teatro São Carlos in Lisbon.

In the 1924-1925 season, he joined a German tour with an Italian opera troupe. In 1925, he went to Italy, and in 1927, he performed the role of Fanuel in Arrigo Boito’s Nerone at La Scala under the baton of Arturo Toscanini. In 1928, he moved to Berlin, where he gave concerts and worked in music education.

In 1929, he made successful guest appearances at the Hamburg State Opera and the Royal Opera in Stockholm. In 1941, he returned to the Berlin Volksoper for a performance. Until 1940, he gave numerous concerts in Germany. From 1939 onward, he worked in his native Spain as a professor at the Conservatoire.
