ANDRÉS PERELLÓ DE SEGUROLA (VALENCIA, SPAIN, 27 MARCH, 1874 – BARCELONA, SPAIN, 23 JANUARY, 1953)
He studied with Varvaro in Barcelona and likely made his debut there in 1896. By 1899 and 1901, he was performing at the Teatro Politeama in Buenos Aires. After gaining recognition in Italy and France, he joined the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1901, debuting in Verdi’s Aida. From 1903, he also enjoyed success at La Scala in Milan, Teatro Regio in Parma, and other prominent Italian venues. His career took him internationally, including performances in Havana in 1905, the Boston Opera in 1907, and the Manhattan Opera House in New York in 1908.
At the Met, he participated in several significant premieres, such as La Fanciulla del West (1910), Gianni Schicchi (1918), Victor Herbert’s Madeleine (1914), and Madame Sans-Gêne by Giordano (1915). He also appeared in the American premieres of Le donne curiose by Wolf-Ferrari (1912), Boris Godunov (1913) as Warlaam, Mascagni’s Lodoletta (1918), and Marouf by Henri Rabaud (1917). In 1913, he returned to Parma to perform in Verdi operas at the Teatro Regio, and in 1910 he sang Mephistopheles in Faust at the Grand Opéra in Paris.
By 1931, he was performing baritone roles in the U.S., including Marcello in La Bohème and Sharpless in Madame Butterfly. That same year, he settled in Hollywood as a voice teacher and ventured into acting, appearing alongside Grace Moore in One Night of Love. His varied career showcased his talent across both operatic and cinematic stages.
