CONCHITA VELÁSQUEZ (VELÁZQUEZ) (? 1899  – BARCELONA, FEBRUARY 17, 1974)

 

 

 

 

Her real name was Concepción Rodríguez. She made her debut in 1925 at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona, where she sang in the following years roles such as Carmen, Amneris in Aida, Leonora in Donizetti’s La Favorita, and Azucena in Il Trovatore. Guest appearances in Madrid, Lisbon, and other Spanish cities helped establish her reputation.

In 1929, she went to Italy, performing in Ancona, Bologna, Ravenna, and Cremona. At the Rome Opera House, she appeared in Bizet’s Carmen. She also gave guest performances at the Opera House in Nice.

In 1937, she sang for a season at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, appearing in Rigoletto, Falstaff, Hänsel und Gretel, and in the premiere of Guastalla’s opera Lucrezia. That same year, she gave guest performances in Germany at the municipal theatres of Bremen and Augsburg.

In Spain, she was also a highly popular Zarzuela singer, and her voice was often compared to that of Conchita Supervía. In addition to her singing career, she was also an accomplished painter and exhibited her work in several art shows.
