Description
MARÍA DE LOS ÁNGELES NIETO IGLESIAS (STAGE NAME, ÁNGELES OTTEIN; ALGETE, 24 JUNE, 1895 – MADRID, 12 MARCH, 1981)
She studied in Madrid under Lorenzo Simonetti and made her debut in 1914 in Madrid in the zarzuela Marina by Pascual Arieta. In 1917, she traveled to Italy for the first time, where she appeared at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome to great acclaim as Rosina in G. Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia. She made guest appearances in other Italian theaters and, in 1918, joined the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. During the 1919-1920 season, she returned to Italy. In 1921, as the leading soprano with the Scotti Grand Opera Company, she embarked on a North American tour. Thanks to Antonio Scotti, she secured an engagement with the New York Metropolitan Opera, making her debut there in 1922 in G. Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia. Although she enjoyed significant success at the Met, she stayed for only one season.
In 1923, she performed at the Teatro Reale in Rome. During the 1924-1925 season, she toured Spain and South America. In Denmark, she was met with sensational success and was hailed as a “Spanish nightingale.” After her marriage in 1926, she retired from the stage but continued to give concerts in her native Spain. From 1941, she dedicated herself to teaching; her notable students included Marimi del Pozo, Pilar Lorengar, Maria Luisa Naché, and Consuelo Rubio. She was appointed as a professor at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid and worked as a professor at the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico from 1960 to 1971.
