Description
ENRIQUE DE LA VARA (CHINCHÓN, 21 MAY, 1911 – CARACAS, 11 AUGUST, 1988)
He studied singing in his hometown with Eladio Chao and surprisingly made his debut as a baritone in 1930. He alternated between opera and zarzuela, though opera was his true passion. With the subsequent change in his vocal register during the second half of the 1940s, he performed a diverse repertoire, including Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Rigoletto, and Madama Butterfly. In 1950, he was awarded the Gold Medal from the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. Engaged to perform in Puerto Rico, he visited several Latin American countries and eventually settled in Venezuela, where he continued performing in concerts and on national television. A multifaceted man, he also dedicated himself to painting and music education. In 1951, his hometown honored him with the title of “Distinguished Son.”
