JESUS DE GAVIRIA (SAN SABASTIAN, 6 JANUARY, 1896 – SAN SABASTIAN, 8 MARCH, 1975)

 

 

 

 

His real name was Jesús Aguirregaviria Onaindia. He studied in Madrid with the tenor Luis Iribarne and made his debut in 1919 at the Lirico in Milan in Pagliacci.

He was married to the Spanish soprano Fidelia Campiña Ontiveros (note: Campiña was her father’s family name, and Ontiveros her mother’s). Early in her career, she was billed as Fidela Campiña de Alcázar, using the family name of her first husband, Alcázar. Later, she was sometimes billed as Fidela Campiña de Gaviria, reflecting her marriage to Jesús Aguirregaviria.

De Gaviria and Campiña performed together in Santiago and Valparaíso in 1929 and 1930, including the Spanish opera La Dolores by Tomás Bretón.

He divorced Campiña in 1941 but continued singing, mainly in the United States, until 1948.
