PEDRO MIRASSOU (BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA, 29 JUNE, 1896 – CORDOBA, ARGENTINA, 1963)

Mirassou was born in Buenos Aires on June 28, 1889, and made his debut at the Teatro Colón in 1922 as “Il Messaggero” in Verdi’s Aida, performing alongside Fleta, Nieto, Dinh Gilly, and Santini. In 1924, he sang Pagliacci at the Teatro de la Opera in Buenos Aires. Like many prominent Argentine opera singers of the time—such as Hina Spani, Luisa Bertana, and Adelaida Saraceni—Mirassou traveled to Europe in pursuit of an international career. However, despite his efforts, he did not achieve major success there.

In 1925, he sang Canio in Pagliacci in Parma, performed in Mule’s Monacella della Fontana, and later took on roles such as Canio and Andrea Chénier in Holland. At La Scala, he appeared in Pedrollo’s Delitto e castigo in 1926 and in Norma in 1931. In 1933, Mirassou gave a concert with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Holland.

Despite his European pursuits, Mirassou’s primary career remained centered at the Teatro Colón, where he became the leading Argentine tenor from 1928 to 1950, specializing in “tenore spinto” roles and sharing the stage with the era’s greatest opera stars. He also took part in numerous world premieres by Argentine and international composers, solidifying his status as a key figure in Argentine opera.
