Description

JOSEP ROCABRUNA I VALDIVIESO (BARCELONA, 9 AUGUST, 1879 – MEXICO CITY, 13 FEBRUARY, 1957)

He studied at the conservatorio del Liceo under Domènec Sànchez and Deyà. Since 1895 he taught violin at the conservatorio del Liceo (1895) and was the first violin of the Liceo orchestra (1897), then of the Crickboom Quartet with Pau Casals, Mathieu Crickboom, Josep Rocabruna and Rafael Gàlvez. Shortly after, in 1901, he went on tour to America with the musical group Octeto Español, performing and triumphing as a concertmaster at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. The following year the octet was moved to Mexico, where he made several performances, but three of the musicians decided to settle in the country: Rocabruna, the pianist Joan Roure and the cellist Guillem Ferrer. Later, together With Luciera G. Jordà, he founded the Jordà-Rocabruna Quintet, which included the musicians Josep Rocabruna (violé 1st), Guillermo Gómez (violé 2nd), Guillem Ferrer (cello), Luis G. Jordà (piano) and Lluís Mas (harmonium). Rocabruna began an important career of promotion of the music in Mexico. There he founded in 1915 the Society of Chamber music, belonging to the Philharmonic Union; also the Symphonic Band of the Syndicate directed of Philharmonic (1926-1928) and along with José F. Vásquez, the Symphonic Band of the Faculty of Music (1929), which at last would turn into the OFUNAM. He was the founder and the director, for many years, of the Symphonic Mexican Band, and also he was the director of the National School of Music of the UNAM (1939-1942). He gave classes to the violinist Silvestre Revueltas.
