LARS EINAR LARSSON (VENDEL, SEPTEMBER 11, 1897 – STOCKHOLM, SEPTEMBER 3, 1983)

 

 

 

 

He first studied singing under the renowned Swedish baritone John Forsell in Stockholm and then continued his education in Berlin and Milan. In 1925, he was immediately engaged by the Royal Opera in Stockholm, where he made his debut as Valentin in Gounod’s Faust and enjoyed an illustrious career as the leading baritone until 1951. During his time at the Royal Opera, he achieved significant success in roles such as Posa in Verdi’s Don Carlo, the title role in Borodin’s Prince Igor, Wolfram in Wagner’s Tannhäuser, Eugene Onegin in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, and Mandryka in Richard Strauss’s Arabella.

He also participated in several notable premieres, including the first performance of Nathanael Berg’s opera Engelbrekt on September 21, 1929, in Stockholm. In 1930, he made guest appearances at the Royal Opera in Copenhagen and the Helsinki Opera House, and he also performed in Norway and at the Tallinn Opera House (Reval). In 1939, after undergoing a neck operation, he had to temporarily pause his career, but he resumed it afterward. He was also a passionate advocate for the welfare of retired stage artists in his native Sweden.
