ANNA OSCÀR-HELLSTRÖM (STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, 29 APRIL, 1875 – STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, 10 SEPTEMBER, 1915)

Her real name was Anna Maria Thulin. At the age of 16, she made her debut at the Royal Court Opera in Stockholm, where she remained a member of the opera company for the entirety of her career, up until her death.

Anna Maria Thulin married the renowned Swedish baritone Martin Oscar (1879-1921) in 1907, who also performed at the Stockholm Opera, making them one of the prominent opera couples of their time. She was considered the leading Swedish soprano of her generation.

Thulin’s operatic achievements included significant premieres in Stockholm, such as the role of Ava in the 1899 premiere of Valdemarsskatten by Andreas Hallén, and the role of Ran in Wilhelm Peterson-Berger’s Ran in 1903. She performed a number of important roles at the Stockholm Opera, including Mimi in La Bohème (1901), Tosca (1904), Charlotte in Werther (1904), Salome (1908), Maddalena in Andrea Chénier (1909), and Lisa in The Queen of Spades (1909).

In addition to her work in Sweden, she achieved notable success abroad, undertaking concert tours through the USA in 1903, 1906, and 1909. In recognition of her contributions to the arts, she was awarded the prestigious Litteris et Artibus order in 1903. Thulin was also a member of the Swedish Music Academy starting in 1908, solidifying her legacy in Sweden’s cultural landscape.
