OLGA BRITA LOVISA HERTZBERG BEYRON, BORN HERTZBERG (NORRKÖPING, 19 OCTOBER, 1901 – STOCKHOLM, 17 NOVEMBER, 1976)
She studied at the Royal Conservatory in Stockholm and furthered her training in Berlin, with I. Brag and E. Pawlo among her teachers. Her debut came in 1924 at the Royal Opera in Stockholm, where she performed as Mignon in A. Thomas’s opera of the same name. Her talent quickly established her as one of Stockholm’s most renowned singers. In 1935, she performed at the Copenhagen Opera, notably in her celebrated roles as Tosca and Elisabeth in Tannhäuser. She achieved further acclaim through guest performances and concerts in cities like Riga, Prague, Budapest, Barcelona, and Helsinki.
Her distinguished career earned her numerous honors: the title of Swedish Court Singer in 1940, the Litteris et Artibus order in 1932, and membership in the Swedish Academy of Music in 1943. Her tenure at the Stockholm Opera extended until 1954, during which she starred in significant premieres, such as Elisabetta in Verdi’s Don Carlos (1933), the title role in Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (1935), the title role in Janáček’s Jenůfa (1941), Judith in the premiere of N. Berg’s Judith (1936), the title role in E. W. Korngold’s Kathrin (1939), and Felicia in the premiere of Rosenberg’s Lycksalighetens ö (1945). She also performed in the 1927 premiere of Wilhelm Peterson-Berger’s Adils och Elisiv at the Stockholm Opera.
She was married to the Swedish tenor Einar Beyron (1901–1979), who, like her, had a prominent career both in Sweden and abroad, particularly as a Wagner interpreter. The couple often performed together, both on stage and in concert halls. Their daughter, Caterina Ligendza (born 1937), also became a successful opera singer, continuing the family’s artistic legacy.
