MARIE SUNDELIUS (KARLSTAD, SWEDEN, 4 FEBRUARY, 1884 – BOSTON, 27 JUNE, 1958)

 

 

 

 

Her real name was Marie Sandtvig. At the age of ten, she moved to Boston, where she studied singing and made her first public appearance in a church concert in Somerville, Massachusetts. Her official concert debut occurred in 1910 in Boston under the direction of Carl Muck. In 1915, she performed in New York in the oratorio Jeanne d’Arc by Bossi. Her stage debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York took place in 1916 as the First Priest in Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride. She remained a member of the Metropolitan Opera until 1928, participating in several opera premieres:

  • In 1917, she appeared in The Canterbury Pilgrims by de Koven.
  • In 1918, she performed in the premieres of Puccini’s Suor Angelica (as Zelatrice) and Gianni Schicchi (as Ciesca), and in Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Golden Cockerel.
  • She created a sensation as the Sea Girl in Weber’s Oberon and in 1922, she sang in the premiere of Catalani’s Loreley.

In the 1926-1927 season, she appeared at the Stockholm Royal Opera. She toured America with the Scotti Opera Company in 1920 and was a member of the Philadelphia Opera Company during the 1929-1930 season. After retiring from the stage, she worked at the Malbin Conservatory in Boston.
