Description
HANSHEINZ SCHNEEBERGER (BERN, 16 OCTOBER, 1926 – BASEL, 23 OCTOBER, 2019)
Hansheinz Schneeberger was a Swiss violinist and distinguished music educator, internationally recognized for his interpretations of classical and twentieth-century music. Born in Bern, Switzerland, on 16 October 1926, he began studying the violin at the age of six. He graduated from the Bern Conservatory in 1944, where he studied with Walter Kägi, and subsequently continued his training with the renowned violin pedagogue Carl Flesch in Lucerne and Boris Kamensky in Paris. In 1945, he received the performer’s prize of the Swiss Musicians’ Association.
From 1952 to 1958, Schneeberger taught at the conservatories of Bern and Biel while pursuing an active performing career with his own string quartet. Between 1958 and 1961, he served as principal concertmaster of the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra (NDR) in Hamburg. In 1961, he was appointed to lead the violin master class at the Basel Academy of Music, where he became an influential teacher of several generations of musicians.
Schneeberger was particularly associated with the performance and promotion of twentieth-century music. He gave the world premiere of Frank Martin’s Violin Concerto in 1952 and performed Béla Bartók’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in Basel in 1958, helping to bring the work to wider recognition. In 1970, he premiered Klaus Huber’s Tempora, further demonstrating his commitment to contemporary composition. During his international career, he performed as a soloist and chamber musician under distinguished conductors, including Ernest Ansermet, and collaborated with celebrated musicians such as pianist Mieczysław Horszowski and cellist Pablo Casals. He also appeared at major European and Asian music festivals.
His discography includes recordings of works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Béla Bartók, Max Reger, Robert Schumann, and other composers. Particularly noteworthy is his 1987 recording of Bach’s six sonatas and partitas for unaccompanied violin, praised for its stylistic insight and expressive depth. Schneeberger played a 1731 Antonio Stradivari violin, which he acquired in 1959 through the Lausanne luthier Pierre Gerber. In recognition of his artistic achievements, he received the Robert Schumann Prize in 1995. He died in Basel, Switzerland, on 23 October 2019, leaving a significant legacy as a performer, champion of contemporary music, and influential violin pedagogue.
