EMILIE HERZOG (ERMATINGEN 17. 12. 1859 – AARBURG 19. 06. 1923)
Her father was a senior teacher in Diessenhofen, Thurgau. Initially trained in piano and organ, she later apprenticed as a milliner before turning to music. She studied singing at the Zurich Music School under Karl Gloggner, then continued her studies in Munich with Adolf Schimon and Amalie Schönchen.
She made her debut in 1880 at the Court Opera in Munich as Page Urbain in Meyerbeer’s Les Huguenots. Over her nine-year tenure in Munich, she achieved notable success in roles such as Blondchen in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Papagena in Die Zauberflöte, Marzelline in Fidelio, Ännchen in Der Freischütz, Micaela in Carmen, and Anne in Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor. She also participated in the world premiere of Wagner’s youth opera Die Feen on June 29, 1888, as Drolla, and in the premiere of Alexander Ritter’s Der faule Hans in 1885.
In 1887, she married Swiss music writer Heinrich Welti (1859–1927). She began singing at the Bayreuth Festival in 1883 and continued her association with the festival over the years.
In 1889, she was engaged by the Berlin Court Opera, where her career flourished. At the Berlin Court Opera, she appeared in the premiere of Felix von Weingartner’s Genesius (1892), Kienzl’s Don Quixote (1898), and Humperdinck’s Heirat wider Willen (1905). Her guest appearances included opera houses in London, Paris, Vienna, and Brussels. Notably, in 1893, she sang in the world premiere of Josef Foerster’s Die Rose von Pontevedra at the Court Theater of Gotha, and in 1896, she performed at the Imperial Court Opera in Moscow.
She joined the Metropolitan Opera in New York for the 1899–1900 season. From 1903, she began teaching singing at the College of Music in Berlin, continuing to perform at the local court opera until 1910. From 1910 to 1922, she served as a vocal pedagogue at the Conservatory of Zurich.
