MAX HIRZEL (ZÜRICH, 18 OCTOBER, 1888 – ZÜRICH, 12 MAY, 1957)

 

 

 

 

Max Hirzel was born on October 18, 1888, in Zürich. He was associated for most of his life with Dresden, where he studied singing with Dora Erl. He was forced to leave Dresden in 1937 because of the political climate.

In 1926, Hirzel sang in the world premiere of Cardillac in Dresden. Between 1925 and 1929, he made recordings in Dresden for Deutsche Grammophon and Parlophone. During the 1935–36 season, Hirzel appeared in Vienna.

Hirzel also appeared successfully at Royal Opera House, where he sang Tamino and Lohengrin. In Switzerland, he performed at the beginning (1917–22?) and at the end of his career in Zürich. After retiring from the stage, he taught singing in Zürich. Hirzel died there on May 12, 1957.
