VASILI SEVASTIANOV (TAMBOV, 1 JANUARY, 1875 – PARIS, 21 OCTOBER, 1929)

 

 

 

 

Thanks to entrepreneur A. A. Tsereteli, he studied vocal art in Milan with E. Rossi and P. Vidal. From 1904 to 1905, Sevastianov furthered his vocal training abroad.

During the 1899-1900 season, he performed at various opera houses including Kharkov (under A. A. Tsereteli), Kiev (1900), and Rostov-na-Donu (1901). Starting in 1901, he became a soloist at the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre. He also performed at the Solodovnikov and Hermitage Theatres from 1902 to 1903. In 1907 and during the 1910-1911 season, he was a soloist at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg.

Sevastianov toured extensively, with notable performances in Petersburg (1901, under M. K. Maksakova), Baku (1902), Moscow (1906/07, at the Opera Theatre of S. Zimin), Riga, Kharkov, Tiflis (1908), Kazan (1908), Samara (late 1909 to early 1910), Eastern Siberia, and Japan (1911). Since 1902, he was involved in concerts for the circle of Russian music enthusiasts, performing romances by Borodin, Cui, Arensky (who dedicated a romance to him), Ippolitov-Ivanov, and Goldenveizer.

In 1911, he served as the stage manager at the National House of Musical Drama in St. Petersburg. After 1917, he worked in Zagreb, Ljubljana, and Bucharest. Known as one of the best Russian tenors, Sevastianov possessed a flexible, beautiful, and powerful voice with a wide range, and his varied repertoire included 26 roles. He was notably the first to perform Werther in Moscow’s premiere of the opera. Unfortunately, he died in poverty.
