THE ELSHUCO TRIO

 

 

 

 

The Elshuco Trio was an American piano trio that existed from 1918 to 1934.  It was named after the first syllables of the name of the famous philanthropist Elizabeth Shurtleff Coolidge (Elizabeth Shurtleff Co olidge). The permanent cellist and de facto leader of the trio was Willem Willeke, the other performers changed.

The trio debuted at New York’s Aeolian Hall on October 31, 1918, with works by Schubert, Brahms, and Ravel, drawing a rave review from The New York Times reviewer:

The polish and balance of their ensemble playing at their first public appearance is not just astonishing: it is refreshingly artistic. And half a dozen seasons would not have given them greater brilliance, greater balance, greater spirit of unity.

And subsequently the press was quite favourable towards the ensemble, noting, for example, in 1920  that the trio “carried its eccentric name high and successfully for three seasons”.
