He was born into a family of Jewish parents. Since 1902, he lived in St. Petersburg and in 1905 studied singing at the St. Petersburg Conservatory under the pedagogue Stanislav Gabel. In 1912, he moved to New York with his family, where he continued his studies privately with Pasquale Amato. He appeared almost exclusively alongside Japanese soprano Tamaki Miura (1884-1946), who undertook major tours during the 1924-32 seasons, performing in G. Puccini’s Madama Butterfly and P. Mascagni’s Iris. In 1917, he appeared with Miura at the Boston Opera in Mascagni’s Iris. When Miura began her European tours in 1920, he performed with her at Italian opera houses. He also appeared in Europe under the pseudonym Vito. After his retirement, he worked at the Chicago Conservatory.
