TODOR MAZAROV (PAVEL BANJA, BULGARIA, 2 JANUARY, 1907 – VIENNA, SEPTEMBER 19, 1975)

 

 

 

 

He first studied at the Pedagogical Gymnasium and worked as a primary school teacher for two years before pursuing a musical education at the Music Academy of Sofia. In 1935, he made his debut at the Sofia National Opera as the messenger in Borodin’s Prince Igor. In 1937, he won a singing competition in Vienna, which led to his immediate engagement by Bruno Walter to perform at the Vienna State Opera. His debut there on 26 September 1937, as Radames in Aida, was a resounding success, followed by another triumph that season as Don José in Carmen. Both critics and audiences were effusive in their praise for the newly discovered tenor.

He remained with the Vienna State Opera until 1953, establishing himself as one of the leading tenors of his time. In 1939, he sang the role of Arnoldo in Rossini’s William Tell at the prestigious Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. That same year, he performed the role at La Scala in Milan and the Rome Opera. Guest performances followed in major European cities, including Florence, Venice, Prague, Sofia, Budapest, Zagreb, Belgrade, and Riga.

Even after leaving the Vienna State Opera, he continued to perform successfully as a concert singer in Bulgaria and Russia, embarking on his final tour through Bulgaria in 1968. In addition to his stage career, he became a respected voice teacher, instructing at the Vienna Conservatory from 1962 to 1964 and later at the Prayner Conservatoire in Vienna from 1964 onward.
