BEATE MALKIN (ODESSA, 13 APRIL, 1892 – NEW YORK, 24 SEPTEMBER, 1973)

 

 

 

 

She studied with Franceschina Prevosti in Berlin and appeared as a guest at the Riga Opera House as early as 1918–1919. From 1920 to 1922, she was engaged at the National Theatre in Mannheim, where she sang, among other roles, Micaëla in Carmen under Wilhelm Furtwängler. In 1924, she appeared at the short-lived Berlin Volksoper. From 1925 to 1933, she was a member of the ensemble at the Berlin Municipal Opera, where she enjoyed great success, while also appearing as a guest at the Berlin State Opera. In 1931, she made a guest appearance at the Vienna State Opera. During the 1927–1928 season, she performed at La Scala in Milan as Agathe in Der Freischütz. In 1934 and 1935, she gave concerts in New York with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and in 1938, she returned to La Scala as a guest artist. Between 1935 and 1946, she undertook several successful concert tours of Russia. She later settled in New York, where she enjoyed a successful career both on stage and in concert. After retiring from performance, she worked as a vocal coach in New York.
