MARIA DE MACCHI (PARUZZARO, 15 SEPTEMBER, 1867 – MILAN, 16 JANUARY, 1909)

 

 

 

 

She studied under Virginia Boccabadati in Milan and made her debut in 1899 at the Teatro Grande in Brescia as Laura in Gioconda. In 1892, she performed at the Teatro Annibal Caro in Civitanova Marche as Leonora in La Forza del destino. During the 1894-95 season, De Marcchi appeared at the Teatro San Carlo in Lisbon in roles such as L’Africana, Lohengrin, I Puritani, and others. In 1895, she also sang as Nedda in Pagliacci at the Teatro Comunale in Trieste. In 1898, she performed at the Teatro Real in Madrid in Il Gladiatore by G. Orefice.

In 1901, De Marcchi performed at La Scala in Milan, taking on the title role in K. Goldmark’s opera La Regina Di Saba. She then had guest performances in Prague (1901), Berlin (1902), and Bucharest (1903). On August 16, 1902, she appeared at the Teatro Verdi in Vicenza in the premiere of G. Orefice’s opera Cecilia. In 1904, she made a guest appearance at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where she sang the title role in Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia alongside Enrico Caruso and Edyth Walker. At the Met, she also performed in Gli Ugonotti, Aida, and Cavalleria rusticana. Her final appearance was in 1909 at the Teatro Lirico in Milan as Carmen in Bizet’s Carmen.
