Description
ZADEL SKOLOVSKY (VANCOUVER, JULY 17, 1916 – BETHESDA, MARYLAND, SEPTEMBER 15, 2009)
Son of Max Skolovsky (real name Motke Pluskalovsky), who emigrated to the United States from Brest-Litovsk, and his wife Kate, née Jones. He grew up in Los Angeles, where his family moved shortly after his birth. He began studying music at the age of five, on a home harmonium. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music with Isabella Vengerova, later working as her assistant; he also took lessons from Leopold Godowsky. In 1939, he won the Naumburg Competition for Young Performers.
A creative collaboration connected Skolowski with Darius Milhaud, who dedicated to Skolowski the Fourth Piano Concerto and Orchestra (first performed by Skolowski and the Boston Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Charles Munch, 1950; there is also a recording of Skolowski with the author as conductor) and the “Hymn of Praise” (French: Hymne de glorification; 1954).
He left behind a number of recordings, including a disc with sonatas by Scriabin, Bartok, Berg and Hindemith.
Since 1975, professor, since 1987, emeritus professor at Indiana University.
