Sol Babitz was an American violinist, musicologist, teacher, writer, and an important pioneer of historically informed performance. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he studied violin in Berlin with the renowned pedagogue Carl Flesch and later in Paris with Marcel Chailley.

After returning to the United States, Babitz became active as a performer and teacher. He performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and worked extensively as a studio musician in Hollywood, participating in numerous film and recording projects, particularly at 20th Century Fox. His versatility allowed him to perform both standard classical repertoire and early music.

Babitz developed a strong interest in the performance practices of earlier centuries and became one of the leading American advocates of historically informed performance. In 1948, he co-founded the Early Music Laboratory in Los Angeles, an organization devoted to the study and performance of Renaissance and Baroque music and to the use of historical instruments and performance techniques.

He was also closely associated with Igor Stravinsky, with whom he developed a long friendship and professional relationship. Babitz performed and collaborated with a number of important composers and musicians and was particularly respected for his scholarly approach to violin playing and early music.

Through his performances, teaching, writings, and research, Sol Babitz played an important role in the development of the early-music movement in the United States. He cont

inued to perform, teach, and write on historical performance practices until his death in 1982.
