Description

ROBERT ZEILER (VIENNA, 4 OCTOBER, 1879 – ? AFTER 1936)

German/Austrian violinist and pedagogue, active in Vienna’s major musical circles during the early 1900s.

Zeiler was a prominent violinist with the Wiener Concertverein and performed as a soloist and orchestral musician at prestigious venues including the Musikverein Wien. He regularly appeared under conductors such as Ferdinand Löwe and Karl Komzák (Junior). His repertoire included Romantic concertos and orchestral works, notably:

Karl Goldmark’s Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 28, which he performed as a featured soloist in 1908.

Hermann Goetz’s Violin Concerto in G major, Op. 22, performed in 1901 under Löwe’s baton.

Orchestral and violin arrangements of works by Wagner, Beethoven, Schubert, and Strauss, performed in combined orchestral and choral concerts.

In addition to performing, Zeiler contributed to violin pedagogy. His “Tägliche Skalen-Studien für Violine” (Daily Scale Studies for Violin), published by Ries & Erler, provided structured technical exercises for violinists, emphasizing scales, intonation, and left-hand technique — reflecting his commitment to developing foundational violin skills.

Zeiler also participated in choral-orchestral concerts with the Wiener Singakademie, demonstrating versatility in both orchestral and ensemble settings. His documented activity spans at least from 1901 to 1908, situating him among the skilled violinists of Vienna during the early 20th century, respected both as a performer and as a teacher.
