CAROLYN CONE BALDWIN (MICHIGAN, USA, 10 JUNE, 1894 – ALAMEDA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, USA, 28 DECEMBER, 1946)

 

 

 

 

Carolyn Cone Baldwin, 55, a noted concert pianist, and her husband, Lieutenant Commander James W. Baldwin, 58, a decorated U.S. Navy veteran, were killed in a four-car crash half a mile west of the toll plaza on the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge. The Baldwins were struck head-on when a car careened over the center line after sideswiping another vehicle. Their car was then hit from behind by another vehicle that was unable to stop.

The Baldwins lived at 58 Palm Avenue in San Francisco and were returning home after visiting their daughter, Carolyn Schlesinger, and her husband, Alex Schlesinger, in Berkeley. The accident occurred at 12:50 a.m. on December 28, 1946. Mrs. Baldwin died at 2:34 a.m., and Mr. Baldwin died about an hour later.

Carolyn Cone was born on June 10, 1896, in Battle Creek, Michigan, to Henry and Frances (Breitenbach) Cone. From the 1920s until her death, Carolyn Cone Baldwin was a renowned concert pianist. She was a highly acclaimed interpreter of many classical composers, including Chopin, Brahms, and Liszt, as well as a capable performer of contemporary music. She regularly appeared with major symphony orchestras in cities across the United States and internationally.

She had been scheduled to perform with the Oakland Symphony Orchestra on January 19, 1947; the concert was instead performed in her honor, with the musicians dedicating the performance to her memory.

Carolyn and James were married on May 2, 1917, in New York City.

Double funeral services for the Baldwins were held on December 30, 1946, at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, California.
