JOSEPH CORNEILLE HUBERT HOLLMAN (MAASTRICHT, 26 OCTOBER, 1852 † PARIS, 31 DECEMBER, 1926)
Joseph Hollman, born in Maastricht, was admitted to the Brussels Conservatory at age fourteen. There he studied cello with A.F. Servais and theory with F.-J. Fétis. He then continued his studies with Léon Jacquard in Paris and with Karl Davidoff in St. Petersburg. In the 1880’s he played in the Meiningen Court Orchestra; in 1887 he returned to Paris. Hollman was one of the most famous cellists of his time, whose concert travels extended to the United States, China and Japan. He is the composer of a number of smaller works for his instrument. Saint-Saëns dedicated his Cello Concerto Nr. 2 to Hollman.
