Description
EVLYN HOWARD-JONES (LONDON, 1 JULY, 1877 – LONDON, 4 JANUARY, 1951)
Howard-Jones studied at the Royal College of Music and later became a pupil of Eugen d’Albert. He made his debut in 1908 at a concert of the Royal Philharmonic Society in London, conducted by Henry Wood, performing Brahms’s Second Piano Concerto. In the following years, he established himself as one of the foremost interpreters of Brahms. He also performed works by contemporary English composers such as Frederick Delius and Cyril Scott, who dedicated several compositions to him, as well as John Ireland. In 1920, Howard-Jones gave the first performance of Scott’s Piano Quintet, which had been dedicated to him, together with the London String Quartet.
Howard-Jones was also active as a conductor, becoming the first conductor of the New Symphony Orchestra in 1906. In 1923, he founded the Federation of Music Clubs, which promoted chamber music, and, with his wife, the violinist Grace Thynne, established the Chelsea Children’s Chamber Music Club. A sought-after piano teacher, he also ran his own piano school in London.
