OLIVA PETRELLA (TERAMO, 1880 – ?)
Daughter of the composer Errico Petrella, she studied at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome under Zaira Falchi and took acting lessons with Virginia Marini. She made her debut in 1901 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice in Wagner’s Tannhäuser. After retiring from the stage, she devoted herself to teaching, but several years later briefly returned to appear in performances of La Wally at the Teatro Nuovo in Bergamo.

ROSINA TORRI (PARMA, 1898 – MILAN, 1975)
She studied first violin, then singing at the Parma Conservatory. She made her debut in 1919 at the Teatro Sociale in Valenza as Mimì in La Bohème. In 1921 she appeared at the theatre in Sassari (Sardinia) as Margherita in Boito’s Mefistofele, and in 1922 sang with the Italian Opera Company in the Netherlands. In 1924 she appeared at La Scala as Musetta in La Bohème, returning there in 1926 for the premiere of Lualdi’s Il diavolo nel campanile.
In 1925 she joined the San Francisco Opera, making a successful debut in Massenet’s Manon. In 1926 she created the role of Liù in Puccini’s Turandot for the Rome Opera, a part she repeated at the Arena di Verona Festival in 1928. She also sang Musetta at Covent Garden in 1926 and was frequently heard on Italian provincial stages. In 1929 she appeared at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples in the premiere of Felice Lattuada’s Don Giovanni. She returned to La Scala in 1934 to sing her signature role, Musetta, in La Bohème.
In 1930 she married the composer and conductor Stefano Vittadini and probably retired from the stage soon afterward.
