Puchelt studied from 1931 to 1935 at the Academy for Church and School Music with Else C. Kraus and Eduard Erdmann as well as at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin. He then worked as a concert pianist and accompanist for well-known singers, instrumentalists and chamber music ensembles. After the Second World War , he continued his career as a piano virtuoso and gave his first concert with the Berlin Philharmonic in September 1945 (Schumann, piano concerto op. 54). In 1949 he was appointed professor for piano at the University of Music Berlin-Charlottenburg and remained in this position until 1978. Puchelt performed in concert in both parts of Germany, Western Europe, the Soviet Union – where he was invited as the first West German pianist in 1956 -, South America, Japan and the United States. When he gave five concerts in the Soviet Union in 1962, after a decision of the West Berlin cultural administration and the directorship of the Berlin Philharmonic, he was not allowed to take part in concerts of the Philharmonic this year as planned. The aim was to “counter public complaints.” Puchelt was a juror at numerous international piano competitions, including a. several times of the Robert Schumann competition in Zwickau, In the 1970s he was a member of the broadcasting council of Sender Freies Berlin, where he was deputy chairman of the program committee. In the 1960s and 1970s, Puchelt also went on tour with his daughter Christiane Edinger . Gerhard Puchelt was honored several times for his outstanding work as a music teacher and concert pianist. In Robert Lienau Musikverlag he published u. a. Lost Sounds: Studies on German piano music from 1830-1880 and performed a re-instrumentation of the 5th piano concerto by Johann Baptist Cramer . He produced numerous radio and recordings (the latter partly at ETERNA / VEB Deutsche Schallplatten [East] Berlin). He is buried in the Dahlem St. Annenfriedhof burial place R 29-19. His grave was dedicated to the city of Berlin from 1990 to 2014 as an honorary grave.
