GÁBOR GABOS (BUDAPEST, HUNGARY, JANUARY 4, 1930 – BUDAPEST, HUNGARY, AUGUST 27, 2014)
Gabos studied with Lajos Hernädi at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, where he received a concert diploma. In 1955 he finished third at the Concours Long-Thibaud-Crespin. In 1958 he shared with Wolfgang Gayler and Rolf Kuhnert the second place at the Kranichstein Music Prize (piano) in Darmstadt. In 1960 he finished fifth at the Concours Musical Reine Elisabeth in Brussels. Together with David Wilde, he received first prize at the Liszt Bartók competition in Budapest. He then became a soloist with the Hungarian Philharmonic. His concert career has taken him through Europe, China and the Soviet Union, with a focus on Hungary. Gabos was awarded the government’s Liszt Prize and he was also a deserved artist of the Hungarian People’s Republic.
