Description
EDMONDO LUCINI (MANTUA, 1886 – BERLIN, 18 NOVEMBER, 1922)
From the mid-1900s, he taught at the First Music Institute in Riga. In 1919, he became the first Professor of Violin at the newly founded Latvian Conservatory. Among his students were Arvīds Norītis and Eduards Vinerts.
As a performer, he actively promoted Latvian music. In 1913, he participated in an evening of Latvian music in Berlin, performing Jāzeps Vītols’s Fantasy on Latvian Folk Songs. A reviewer for the magazine Signals for the Musical World noted that Lucini’s playing possessed a rounded tone and a certain elegance, although it was not without inaccuracies.
During the 1910s, he took part in various chamber ensembles. According to the memoirs of Jānis Mediņš, in 1915 he performed with him in a piano trio at private concerts held under the patronage of General V. V. Belyaev. He also played second violin in the string quartet of the Latvian Conservatory (primarius Jānis Lazdiņš).
Before the outbreak of World War I, he recorded Vītols’s Fantasy on Latvian Folk Songs, Andrejs Jurjāns’s Lullaby, Alfreds Kalniņš’s Elegy, and several other short pieces, sometimes with Jāzeps Mediņš as accompanist. He also accompanied Adolfs Kaktiņš on several recordings.
