PAUL KOCHANSKI (ODESSA, 14 SEPTEMBER, 1887 – NEW YORK, 12 JANUARY, 1934)

His real name was Pawel. He studied violin first with his father and then at age 7 in Odessa with Emil Mlynarski whose teacher had been Leopold Auer. In 1897 Kochanski went with Mlynarski to Warsaw. Mlynarski became director of the Warsaw Philharmonic in 1901 and appointed Kochanski, then 14, concertmaster. In 1903 Kochanski went to Brussels to study with César Thomson at the Brussels Conservatoire. Kochanski was involved, together with his friends the composer Karol Szymanowski and the pianist Artur Rubinstein, in the movement known as Young Poland promoting more progressive attitudes toward music in Warsaw. Szymanowski dedicated his Violin Concerto No. 1 in 1916 to Kochanski, who contributed the cadenza. Although best known as a violinist, Kochanski was also a composer and arranger. Kochanski died of cancer at age 47.
