Description
GREGOIRE GOUREVITCH (GRIGORY ABRAMOVICH GUREVICH) (KIEV, 30 JUNE, 1895 – NEW YORK, 11 JANUARY, 1959)
Gregoire Gourevitch, born into a Jewish family, was a talented pianist who received his early musical training under the guidance of the renowned composer Alexander Scriabin. His formative years were steeped in the rich cultural milieu of pre-revolutionary Russia, but the upheaval of the Russian Revolution prompted him to emigrate, eventually settling in Paris.
In Paris, Gourevitch established himself as a prominent figure in the city’s vibrant musical scene. He gave numerous recitals, showcasing his exceptional pianistic skills, and made recordings for Pathé, a leading record label of the time. These recordings contributed to his growing reputation as a distinguished concert pianist.
In 1929, Gourevitch and his wife embarked on a remarkable journey across the Atlantic aboard the LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin, the famous German airship. This historic voyage marked a new chapter in his life, as he arrived in the United States.
In the U.S., Gourevitch continued to build on his success, becoming a sought-after concert pianist. His performances were well-received, and he carved out a successful career in the American music world.
Gregoire Gourevitch’s life was closely connected to his family, including his brother, Boris Gourevitch, who was a renowned philosopher. Despite the challenges of displacement and starting anew in a foreign land, Gregoire Gourevitch left a lasting legacy as a gifted pianist and a testament to the resilience and creativity of émigré artists in the 20th century.
